My favorite new google map mashup

Ever wondered if you dig a hole, exactly where it would come out on the other side of the earth? I sure have. Now I don’t have to wonder. Ah, technology.

Our trip was Un-belizeable

Jil and I spent a week in Belize to recharge. We barely made it out between the first and second blizzard. Our Friday morning Denver flight was canceled, so we had to drive to Colorado Springs on Thursday night in the blizzard, which took 3 1/2 hours instead of the usual 1 1/2. Somehow, we made it in time for the flight. Of course, it was delayed 3 hours.

We finally made it to Dallas and saw the news of how bad it was in Colorado. We spent the night there, then made it to Belize City and finally San Pedro on Ambergris Caye on Friday evening. We took a water taxi and arrived at our villa around 7pm.

Jil was feeling sick suddenly, and slept til 2pm the next day. I got up early, at 11am. Man, that was nice. I awoke to a beautiful view of the Carribean sea and the worlds second longest barrier reef about a half mile offshore. We spent that day just hanging out hoping Jil would get better. She did, from the lack of rest I suppose!

Our week in San Pedro was awesome. We went to four snorkel spots, did some zip lines through the trees, and went cave tubing. A few pics are up on Flickr.

No cars are allowed on the island, and the locals get around on golf carts. We were staying about 4 miles from “town” and the road was basically impassable. So water taxi was always the way to go, or a 1 hour walk to town. The beach was filthy in spots - they basically never pick up the crap that washes ashore except at the resorts.

The food was interesting - we preferred to stock up at the grocery store and eat at home most of the time. But we did venture out to two or three restaurants that were generally good. I figured there’d be more Mexican food, but most places had meat (usually chicken) plus rice and beans or of course seafood.

There are only about 500 hotel rooms on the island, so you don’t bump into tons of other toursts there which is nice. All in all I think we went at a good time of the year. The weather was great - we got some rain but it almost always passed quickly.

If you’ve never been to Belize and like to live like a local on vacation, it’s pretty easy to do there. Ok, a local with a condo and a private pool. Same diff.

I fixed the oopsie

Turns out that my personal blog has been using feed summaries instead of full feeds. I hate feeds that do that, so I just wanted to let you know that it was an accident.

Believe it or not, this was actually caused by a typo I made on FeedBurner. I set up the feed url from wordpress as www.DavidGCohen.com/blog/?feed=rss. I meant to type ?feed=rss2. Apparantly, the earlier RSS spec only supports article summaries. Oops.

Anyhoo, it’s fixed and I’ll not annoy you any more with summaries. Yeah, you now get full text in the RSS feed! Lucky you.

24, oh man…

This is tough. Do I go and watch the first episode of day 6 off of BitTorrent, or do I wait and watch it live? I’m going for live, since a) it’s legal and b) I’m having people over for a 24 party on Monday. If you’re a fan and watch to join us, lemme know!

Heading to Cali

I’m heading out to Silicon Valley this week to visit SonicSwap (who acquired earFeeder) and to promote TechStars, which will launch it’s marketing efforts next week (yes, then I’ll even tell you what it is).

Following my “never eat alone” rule, I’ve still got a couple of open meals. Let me know if you’re in the area and want to get together.

New look

I’ve updated my personal web site with a new look and simplified information about me. I also got rid of all those creepy talking heads. No idea where that thought came from, but lucky for you, I’m over it.

Tagged

I’ve been avoiding this “Things you don’t know about me” meme for a couple of months now on my ColoradoStartups blog. I have basically been refusing to answer it, because I don’t think my readers care too much about my personal life. So fine, Devin, here on my personal blog are five things you (probably) don’t know about me. I’m sure the Colorado Startups readers appreciate the omission over there.

1. I have a 19 month old daughter. When I got up to switch some wash, she wrote the following while I was away. Notice the binary nature of it. I’m dead serious. — p””o0i9y75taas b QIQIOOIIIO1.

2. I’m a huge FSU fan. As such, I hope the Gators lose tomorrow.

3. There are two TV shows I never miss. 24 and Lost.

4. I once met Bob Griese when I was on vacation in North Carolina with my parents. He was tossing the football around with his son Brian, who played for the Broncos. I threw it around with them a bit and I had a much better arm at the time than Brian. Sure, I was older, but so what.

5. I own a football that was carried by OJ Simpson in his last football game ever (it was a punt return). It was given to me by a friend of my dad’s, way before all that happened.
