My friend Micah is on a world-wide quest to become closely associated with the word “douche bag”. As of today he’s #156 on Google when searching under that term. Even though I know that my mom is reading this, I still think it’s important to help my friends.
So, Micah, you Douche Bag, here you go. I’m praying to the Google Gods for you.
A crowd of friends gathered at MadKast mansion recently for one of their famous “it’s a day of the week” parties. One thing led to another, which then led to various minor acts of arson. Such as…..
The “Coors Box Hanging from Tree” Fire
All of this was of course augmented by an aerosol spray can.
The “BBQ Grill” Fire
Oh, and mom, don’t worry, I was just the photographer.
In 1999, we sold Pinpoint Technologies (now ZOLL Data Systems) to ZOLL Medical Corporation. I continued to work there for several years after the sale, and got to know many of the great people at ZOLL in Boston. ZOLL has a great story - they were listed on NASDAQ 15 years ago when it had $21M in sales and 125 employees, and since that time they’ve grown to become a huge force in the health care industry. ZOLL now employs over 1,200 and sells defibrillators and other products (such as our public safety software suite, RescueNet) in over 140 countries, and have grown to more than $250M in annual sales. They’re also one of Americas most trustworthy companies.
Last Tuesday, my friend and CEO Rick Packer (middle, brown suit) rang the opening bell at NASDAQ, and in classic ZOLL style he made sure to bring along employees (in white) who were with the company when it went public in 1992.
Congrats to the great people at ZOLL on an amazing run!
Our (relatively) new friends Patrick and Maureen live in Martin Acres in Boulder. Once in a while they randomly have an outdoor theater set up. So far, Jil and I have gone to see Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (always fun) and The Graduate (very good).
It seems that our job is to bring way too much ice cream for the group. This time we brought way too many Klondike ice cream sandwiches.
Just finished an hour “workout” over at Ben Casnocha’s place. I think we played 6 games of ping pong, and somehow I managed to split with him, including one clutch comeback (down 17-20). I like to think that he didn’t let up, either, but maybe he did. I had predicted “shock and awe” in a late night email flurry last night, but it turns out that Ben is mentally tough.
After I saw his post about another epic ping pong battle, I asked if I could come give it a shot. I play alot of tennis so I naturally “get” racquet/paddle sports, but don’t get to the ping pong table very much. But when you’re playing somebody else who’s good, it’s pretty fun.
Playing against Ben is tough, because he can reach literally anything. If you challenge him, my advice is twofold. First, hit into his body and let his wingspan work against him as much as you can. Second, when you really need a point, float an easy serve to his forehand once in a while and he’ll sometimes overhit. His backhand is too good, and he’s expecting it on most serves.
My buddy Tosh who works at GooSketchTube sent me this time lapse of the recent blizzard here in Colorado. It goes too fast, so stop it and drag the slider yourself so you can control the pace.
Jil, Andrew, Delaney, and I spent a nice labor day weekend with our friends, Kris and David Brown, at their cabin in Winter Park (CO).
We’ve been meaning to do this for a while. The Browns have two girls, so we made a kid adventure weekend out of the trip. We rode the alpine slide and spent a bunch of time walking, climbing rocks (pictured) and at new, local playgrounds.
Our friends Jon and Cyndi (Baker) Borden just had a baby boy, Julian. Cyndi did most of the work, we are told. We went to visit them in the hospital the day Julian was born. Congrats guys!
